TenStep/PMICAC Risk Management
Risk refers to future conditions or circumstances that exist outside of the control of the project team that will have an adverse impact on the project if they occur. In other words, whereas an issue is a current problem that must be dealt with, a risk is a potential future problem that has not yet occurred. A reactive Project Manager tries to resolve issues when they occur. A proactive Project Manager tries to resolve potential problems before they occur. Many problems can be seen ahead of time. Risk management is a proactive process that is invoked to attempt to eliminate these potential problems before they occur, and therefore increase the likelihood of success on the project.

TenStep-PMICAC Estimating Class
Projects that start out with poor estimates are doomed to failure. Yet, there is no question that estimating work is difficult because it is partially an art and partially a science. The “science” component, consisting of formal estimating techniques and formulas, can be learned and applied with practice. The “art” component, consisting of making decisions without all of the facts, and accounting for the people side of the equation, is more difficult to master. The objective of the estimator is to base as much of the estimate as possible on the “science” side, while also applying sound judgment and valid techniques to the “art” side.

Gathering Business Requirements
One of the primary reasons that projects struggle is that the project team does not fully understand the customer requirements. The project team must meet the needs and expectations of the client to be successful. Gathering requirements involves more than just asking a few questions and then building the solution. Projects with any degree of complexity need a formal process to ensure that all of the requirements are accurately gathered, reviewed, documented and approved.

Problem Solving
Problems occur on every project, in every organization and in every aspect of life. Small, seemingly inconsequential problems pop up every day. Our instinct is to get rid of these small problems as soon as possible without regard to whether the solution is correct or optimal. On the other hand, large problems can seem insurmountable, causing paralysis on the part of an individual or an entire team. The truth is that all problems, whether big or small, have the potential to affect our organization, our project or us as individuals. In this class, students will learn important problem-solving skills and techniques to help ensure that they can overcome any hurdle.

TenStep Research Survey. Knowing-Doing Paradox
Project management best practices are critical to organizational success, but they are inconsistently applied. It is little wonder that “C” level executives are frustrated with disappointing projects that hamper achievement of corporate strategic goals. Project sponsors inadvertently contribute to this problem by not implementing important and well-known project and portfolio management best practices.

Agile Project Lifecycle
For many years, there were two major approaches for structuring Information Technology (IT) development projects - traditional waterfall or iterative development. New approaches are now available that fall under the general category of “light” or Agile methodologies. Calling them methodologies is probably too broad a word. It might be better to refer to them as development approaches, or even philosophies. The purpose of this class is to provide an overview of Agile terminology, concepts and roles. The class will also highlight a common Agile lifecycle model so that students can see how an Agile project could be structured from start to finish. By the end of the class students will see why these Agile processes are exciting and unique. Students will also have enough information to start an Agile initiative in their organization.
